Black Sheep win ‘08 Open Crew Boating Nationals

“Tactics on the final beat, Crew Boating Nationals - Open International Crew Boating Race ‘08″ Kirsty Laws The final day of the ‘08 Open International Crew Boating Races was sailed at Algies Harbour these day. The Black Sheep won the event in close final from top placed youth crew Mahurangi.
After struggling through the 1st two days with minimal breeze, the wind finally arrived, & the final day was sailed in faultless crew boating conditions, with steady 8-12 knt western. The Black Sheep crew of Bradley Farrand, John Sandall, Reuben Corbett, Georgina Hill, Natasha Sheldon & Craig Tuke, went through the Round Robin undefeated. In the semifinal versus the Harriers from Kerikeri High School they won the 1st regatta, gone the 2nd but recovered to win the 3rd. In the 2nd semifinal Mahurangi gone the 1st regatta to ADLA but took the next two & the finals spot.
The finals were interesting viewing with Black Sheep engaging the 1st in the best-of-five series, then losing two to Mahurangi previously attractive the final two regattas & the title. they are now qualified to substitute for New Zealand at the World Crew Boating Races in Perth in December ‘09. Three New Zealand crews can attend, so there will be extreme contest at the Spring Race in September, the next selection event.
The gold flotilla final was won by the Aussies (Brisbane), from the Zephyrs (Bucklands Shore). The Aussies had struggled initially with the unfamiliar 420 sailing boats & single-flag protest system, but were performing strongly by the final day.
