“Entering the harbour in Kalimnos, Greece - RPAYC Aegean Rally Update” Lauren Snow-White Mariner Sailing Holidays RPAYC Aegean Rally Update.
Lauren Snow-White reports:
Our day time temperatures are now the high 20’s & continuing to climb as we head south east & the evenings cool nicely making for ideal sleeping temperature onboard the sailboats. These Day the breeze guru even sent some breeze & the 10 kilometer regatta from Knidos to Palamut was blinder after slow start.
Along the way we’ve celebrated with our diner functions at variety of Greek & Turkish Tavernas. Poppy’s Taverna in Kalimnos was truthfully an energetic experience, as the master Sylvia, after preparing & serving our meal, had our complete group learning traditional Greek dances well into the night. In Palamut, little town on the Turkish beach, we dined at one of the oldest & most attractive buildings in the area. Whether we’re in Greece or Turkey the food has been fanciful with plenty of variety & the welcome we get from the people makes us feel we’re guests in their houses quite than consumers in their restaurant.
Then there’s Bodrum, positively must see if you’re after fine nightlife or shower in the cleanest bathroom at all seen in dockage. Lying in our cabins at night we can still perceive the thumping beat of music resounding from nightclubs & bars across town until the early hours of the morning. The music ultimately stops right previously the mosque begins the 1st call to prayer at 5.00am.
The unique thing around this rally is that no two places visited are the identical. As RPAYC jury member Leon Wilson put it, “…what I love most around this trip is the diversity”. Not only do you’ve the contrast ‘tween Greece & Turkey but you besides get to experience the difference ‘tween places such as Arki where the goats outnumber the people, & bustling cities such as Bodrum.
Currently in 1st place is ‘Ankka’, Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 52.2 skippered by Tim Armytage. Following very closely with only one point difference is Garry Holder’s crew on ‘Altea’, Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 49. At present there are three in 3rd place & with only two regattas to go contest amongst the crews is rising while most claim they’re “truly just trawlers” & not competitory.
The event is due to finish in Marmaris.
