Townsville was new addition to the circuit last year & the event attracted thousands of spectators to Offshore Superboat Races. Chairman Mark Gibbs declared the regatta phenomenal victory & rewarded the sunny city by naming it the host of the deciding round for ‘08.

‘We were thrilled by the spectator turnout along The Strand last year, it was good to receive so much support,” Sir Gibbs said. “Everybody implicated in the event agreed on its victory & was blown away by the atmosphere provided by the crowds… we’re all thrilled the regatta has become regular feature on our event calendar.”

Over 20 superboats, competing in some categories, will rip about the liquid course at speeds in excess of 220km/h! Champions are granted based on distance travelled, with the regatta covering about eight maritime kilometres & lasting around an hour.

Crew Maritimo drivers Tom Barry-Clevis & Pal Virik Nilson secured Category One tournament success after their evocative win at the inaugural Sydney Superboat Large Prix in February. Impact Steel & Simrad are tipped as favorites in the combat for 2nd place.

Among the other race categories competing, Saracen is the frontrunner in the Supercat Outboard category; Ezy Does It currently leads the Supercat Outboard Lite category; albeit Grumpy Mongrel is probably to take out the title in the Excellent Vee Lite category.

The sport of offshore superboat racing is gaining steady momentum in Australia thanks to events of this gentle that are already big business overseas. Crowds of 900000 have been known to collect along shorelines in Europe to experience the adrenalin-charged action.

Among host of other free activities organised about the Townsville regatta, fans can get an up-close perspective of the aim-built sailing boats on Sunday & Monday morning at the dry pit area on Mr Leslie Thiess Drive.

The pole position shoot-out will take place from 3:30pm on Sunday 21 May & the main event will roar into action at about 12:00pm on Monday 22 May.

Spectators can watch the evocative machines regatta past within super view of the esplanade, with the best vantage point being Picnic Harbour Headlands at The Strand.
